“A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, but to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet” (Proverbs 27:7).
Material prosperity and abundance can easily become detrimental to you spiritually. In his final days of his 120-year life, Moses warned God’s people (in Deut. 6:10-12, 8:6-17, 11:13-17) to take heed lest they so enjoy God’s blessings of material prosperity and abundance that they forsake God. Not only does a tummy fed a diet of tasty treats have less of an appetite for sweets, it also can have less hungering and thirsting for God and His holy will.
On the other side of that coin is the spiritually impoverished person who hungers and thirsts for righteousness. Every holy word of God’s will is precious and delicious. Like Cornelius and those who had gathered with him to hear the words of Peter, they delighted to hear all things commanded by God (Acts 10:33). The only itch their ears had was for the truth.
A fully stomach can make hearts dull to the truth, ears deaf to the truth, and eyes blind to the truth. Not so with a hungry soul. No matter how unpleasant the truth, it is welcomed and embraced. Your spiritual taste buds tell a lot about you.
Do you find spiritual things loathsome or sweet?
