“As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, so the heart of kings is unsearchable” (Proverbs 25:3).
“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” (Proverbs 21:1).
The colossal difference between human and divine abilities is clear when these two proverbs are compared.
For the omniscient God—a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Heb. 4:12)—a king’s private reflections are an open book. Jehovah knows his every thought and motive. For humanity, no one is a “mind reader”. The heart of a king—or anyone else, for that matter—is learned by revelation; it must be communicated. We are not omniscient.
For the sovereign God—the Most High who rules in the kingdom of men and gives earthly power to whomever He chooses (Dan. 4:32)—a king’s heart is ever subject to His providential activity. For humanity, a king’s mind usually must be persuaded to one’s point of view. “By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, and a gentle tongue breaks a bone” (Prov. 25:15).
Without the dense fog of pride, the colossal differences between God and man can be clearly seen.
