Things to Buy and Never Sell

“Buy the truth, and do not sell it, also wisdom and instruction and understanding” (Proverbs 23:23).

Stockbrokers are ever alert to what investments to buy and sell. It is an occupation full of uncertainty and volatility. Everyone wants to find the surefire stock investments which significantly increase his net worth. What to buy, and when? What to sell, and when?

Solomon identifies four things to spend your life investing in. These are:

Truth. In its most fundamental sense, truth is that which corresponds to reality. Since Jehovah is the ultimate reality and the source of all existing reality, truth is inherent in God (John 14:6). Because God cannot lie (Titus 1:2) or even be tempted to (James 1:13), His word is ever truth (John 17:17).

Wisdom. Defined as “knowledge coupled with an inner quality that embodies a heart and life in conformity with the purposes and character of God”, a wise person leads a godly life. Godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Tim. 6:6).

Instruction. The specific type of instruction under consideration here is best understood as “admonition”. It is the stouthearted love God has for His children which includes firm correction (i.e., chastisement) when the peril of folly threatens to ruin His beloved ones (Prov. 22:15, 23:13-14). It is divine guidance which seeks your spiritual success over your self-esteem.

Understanding. Spiritual discernment and insight gleaned from prudent thinking is a mark of spiritual maturity (Heb. 5:14). Understanding the will of the Lord is an essential ingredient to spiritual victory (Eph. 5:15-17).

Truth. Wisdom. Instruction. Understanding. The time to buy them is now. The time to sell is never.
