“He covets greedily all day long, but the righteous gives and does not spare” (Proverbs 21:26).
Another telltale difference between the righteous and the unrighteous is: the righteous are generous with their blessings and the unrighteous are not.
Being blessed by God and abundantly grateful for His kind providence, the righteous are generous. Jesus plainly stated His standard in Luke 6:30-31: “Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.” An important reason a Christian works is so that “he may have something to give him who has need” (Eph. 4:28).
No so with the unrighteous, especially the lazy. They are covetous. They are greedy hoarders. Generosity is not a characteristic they have. It is not viewed as a virtue but as a weakness and folly.
It is impossible for the lazy to be generous because they are much bigger “want-ers” than workers. They covet greedily all day long. Therefore, any blessing they receive from God cannot be thankfully shared with anyone. It will be consumed on self. What a miserable existence!
