“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles” (Proverbs 21:23).
No one desires to have unwanted intruders on their property and in their home. Therefore, locks, watch dogs, walls, motion sensors, and alarm systems are obtained to guard them and their loved ones. The essentiality of a security system at your residence may be debatable to some, but the one Solomon discusses in this proverb is not.
Here and throughout Scripture, the importance of tireless tongue control is emphatic: Guard your mouth and tongue; refrain your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit (Ps. 34:13; 1 Pet. 3:10); restrain your mouth with a muzzle (Ps. 39:1).
An ever-vigilant guard upon your mouth and tongue keeps your soul from troubles. This is a security system every wise person has.
