No Ears and One Mouth

“A fool has no delight in understanding but in expressing his own heart” (Proverbs 18:2).

When teaching school, there were occasions in which I would tell a student: “You have two ears and one mouth; do the math.” The person Solomon depicts in this proverb has no ears and one, very busy mouth.

To gain such spiritually vital things as knowledge, discernment, understanding, and wisdom, you must keep your mouth shut and your ears open. Sadly, a fool has no interest or delight in this. His mouth is a faucet which continuously flows. His ears are atrophied from perpetually disuse.

A fool talks much but has nothing to say. A fool’s favorite subject for “conversation” is himself.

          Don’t be foolish.
