“He who heeds the word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he…There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 16:20, 25).
You are probably more likely to change the words and order to “trust and obey”, but the two ingredients to being happy/blessed are unchanging. There are no possible substitutes in this formula for genuine spiritual and emotional well-being.
The humble spirit which is vastly superior to a haughty one (Prov. 16:18-19) serves as the firm foundation and pre-requisite for heeding God’s revealed word. It compels the wise person to reject the way which seems right to him, especially when God’s counsel on the matter is different. Trusting God and His word over your own “Behold I thought”—as Naaman (2 Kings 5:10-14) and Peter (Luke 5:4-6) did—is essential to wisdom and divine blessing.
Heed and Trust or Trust and Obey.
There is no other way.
