“Fools mock at sin, but among the upright there is favor” (Proverbs 14:9).
Every person decides the attitude and mindset he has towards sin. The wise and righteous person hates every false way (Psalm 119:104, 128). The unwise and unrighteous do not. Some will deny sin; some will minimize sin; some will make a sport out of sin; some will mock sin.
As used here, the word “mock” denotes an attack of ridicule upon the very idea that God has termed certain actions and attitudes as sin. It also includes the verbal outpouring of contempt upon all those who view sin as God does. This verbal attack arises from a heart full of pride which ultimately believes it has an understanding of good and evil which is superior to the holy God of heaven!
Anyone who believes himself to be a higher and better authority than God about sin is a fool. Everyone who mocks at sin and scorns the God who accurately identifies sin is a fool.
