Seeking and Not Finding

“A scoffer seeks wisdom and does not find it, but knowledge is easy to him who understands” (Proverbs 14:6).

Without the fear of the Lord, seeking for wisdom is a futile pursuit. A scoffer—one who is proud and haughty (Prov. 21:24)—could be given a dozen lifetimes to spend in pursuit of wisdom and still be bereft of it.

Often, wisdom employs such unpleasant delivery services as correction and rebuke (Prov. 9:8). These modes of transportation are completely unacceptable to one who is proud and haughty. Therefore, “a scoffer does not listen to rebuke” (Prov. 13:1). Therefore, a scoffer will seek and never find wisdom.

But one who humbly fears God has riches, honor, and life (Prov. 22:4). A willingness to prize wisdom over pride makes knowledge of God and truth attainable and pleasant. This one will seek and find wisdom.
