“The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray…In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death…Make no friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man do not go, lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul” (Proverbs 12:26, 28; 22:24-25).
Because “evil company corrupts good habits” (1 Cor. 15:33), you cannot be too careful and thoughtful when choosing those people who will often have intimate access to your heart and mind. Close friends which aid and encourage you in the way of righteousness are invaluable. Those who strive to influence you in the way of wickedness are abominable.
The wise and righteous person, therefore, is choosy. Not everyone seeking to be your friend should be granted their desire. Their character, habits, lifestyle, values, priorities, and speech all matter. A little leaven of unrighteousness in these areas can poison you.
Seek and choose your close friends based upon whether they will help you stay in the way of righteousness and life, the pathway in which there is no death.
