“He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage” (Proverbs 11:28).
The love of money, the belief that life consists in the abundance of possessions, and the false security that wealth overpromises without delivering have been the downfall of multitudes throughout human history. Yet, God’s unchanging declaration remains: “He who trusts in his riches will fall.”
He is a fool who has laid up his treasures only upon this earth. Not only will he fall into temptations and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts, he will drown in destruction and perdition (1 Timothy 6:9). The piercing stabs of many sorrows (1 Timothy 6:10) in life and eternity await everyone who trusts in his riches.
Not so for the righteous. Their love of God and His righteousness, their belief that the abundant life is the godly life found in Christ, coupled with the genuine security found in Christ, will cause their spirit to flourish like a tree firmly planted by streams of water.
He is no fool who lays up his treasures in heaven. Doing good, being rich in good works, being always ready to give, and willing to share (1 Timothy 6:18) are what guarantee the righteous will flourish.
Are you falling or flourishing?
