“A gracious woman retains honor, but ruthless men retain riches” (Proverbs 11:16).
This proverb serves as a perfect illustration of the truth Jesus stated in Matthew 6:21—“for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
When a woman’s heart treasures the adorning beauty of graciousness, goodness, kindness and mercy, she will be blessed with divine favor and the honor her meek and quiet spirit accumulates. She will reap and retain what she has sown and valued.
When a man’s heart treasure the soul-cankering pursuit of wealth, his character will increasingly be coarsened by the love of money and the ruthlessness it produces. He will reap and retain what he has valued and pursued.
In two parables (Luke 12:16-21 and Luke 16:19-31), Jesus spoke of men who ruthlessly pursued riches. They retained their earthly treasures until their dying day. Once death came, the eternal fact of their spiritual bankruptcy was unavoidable and inescapable.
