Remember, Obey, Submit to, and Greet

“Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct…Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you…Greet all those who rule over you, and all the saints” (Hebrews 13:7, 17, 24).

Specific instructions concerning the leaders of spiritual Israel are given in this final chapter of Hebrews.

First, they are to be remembered (v. 7). This present imperative is appropriate for these spiritual mentors and leaders who have taught and modeled how to live as a Christian. They have not only “talked the talk”, they have also “walked the walk”. Their authority as leaders among God’s people has been earned. It is deserved. When a thorough investigation and consideration of their life has been made, their example is worthy of imitation. It can be followed with God’s approval.

Second, they are to be obeyed and submitted to (v. 17). These present imperatives arise from these spiritual leaders’ divinely assigned authority to watch over God’s sheep and be accountable for their welfare. Continuous spiritual alertness is a requisite of their divinely given duty. Such a weighty responsibility is discharged more easily when God’s sheep are compliant and yielding to their godly leadership.

Third, they are to be greeted (v. 24). This imperative implies a sense of personal warmth and respect which acknowledges and appreciates these godly leaders for who they are and how they have lived before God. It is the polar opposite of giving someone “a cold shoulder”.

Good spiritual leaders are an invaluable treasure. In practical terms, they are best appreciated when they are remembered, obeyed, submitted to, and warmly greeted/appreciated.
