“to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant…” (Hebrews 12:24).
In the patriarchal age, Job bemoaned the fact that there was no mediator between God and him “who may lay his hand on us both” and help him resolve his anguished complaints with God (Job 9:33).
The Law of Moses (I.e., the covenant before the new covenant) was given “through angels by the hand of a mediator” (Galatians 3:19), but neither Moses nor angels are perfectly qualified intermediaries between humans and Jehovah.
The mediator of the new (and better–Hebrews 8:6) covenant is the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). Being the Son of God and the Son of Man, He alone is perfectly qualified to “lay His hand” on both humans and Jehovah and provide perfect reconciliation and fellowship between these two estranged parties.
Not only did Jesus’ death provide redemption from the transgressions committed by those under the first (old) covenant (Hebrews 9:15), it also inaugurated the new covenant (Hebrews 9:16) in which He could serve as the one mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5).
Clearly, Jesus is the perfect mediator of the new and better covenant!
