“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” (Hebrews 11:3).
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth” (Psalm 33:6).
Time, space, and matter were created by God ex nihilo (a Latin phrase which means “out of nothing”). Because no human was alive when God created the heavens and the earth (nor for any of the first five days of time), knowing that this is historically and scientifically accurate is a matter of faith (just as all other explanations of our universe’s origin are).
The difference between the Christian’s faith and all others is that his faith comes by hearing God’s word (Romans 10:17), not some “scientific” speculation of man. This is what God—who cannot lie (Titus 1:2)—states on the matter. This is how “living and powerful” (Hebrews 4:12) God’s word is!
“The things which are seen were not made of things which were visible” (i.e., already in existence). They came out of nothing, and when they have served their purpose, they will be dissolved into nothingness and replaced with a new heaven and a new earth which is suited for eternal existence.
God’s creation of our universe ex nihilo is the first and foundational declaration of Scripture. Doubting this statement of God’s word is to be ensnared in Satan’s oldest wile.
