“But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated” (Hebrews 10:32-33).
Satan is a master sadist. Among his many wiles is the ability to exact much pain and hardship on God’s people, just like he did on Job.
In the land of Palestine in the first century, Christians endured a great struggle with suffering, just as Jesus did (Hebrews 2:10). Public embarrassment, vicious verbal abuse, violent physical assaults, libelous criminalization, illegal seizure and confiscation of personal property were all ways in which the sadist Satan harassed and made havoc of Christ’s disciples.
In obedience to Jesus’ command in Matthew 5:10-12, this horrific tsunami of suffering was met with joyful acceptance. They understood the prophets of old were horribly mistreated because of their unwavering commitment to God. They understood that all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus would suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). They also knew that no amount of tribulation, distress, persecution, nakedness, peril, or sword could rob them of the better and enduring possession of eternal life in heaven.
The only way Satan’s spiritual sadism succeeds is if you cast away your confidence in God and live in harmony with the counsel of Job’s wife (to “curse God and die!”—Job 2:9).
If, instead, you determine to be faithful unto death by fighting the good fight, finishing the race, and keeping the faith (2 Timothy 4:7) your reward in heaven will be great (Luke 6:23).
The choice is yours.
