“For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens” (Hebrews 7:26).
Like a pair of gloves custom made for your hands, the Greek verb prepo denotes the idea of two things which are perfectly suited for one another. The apostle Paul used prepo to connect the absence of immorality, impurity, and covetousness with those who are saints (in Ephesians 5:3). In 1st Timothy 2:10, it is used to join women who are committed to godliness with the adorning of themselves modestly and discreetly.
In both of its occurrences in Hebrews, prepo is in the imperfect tense. This would communicate the idea of something that was and continues to be appropriate or fitting.
God’s solution to the problem of human redemption was—and remains—perfect. It was the perfect solution for God (who desired to bring many sons to glory) to make the captain of their salvation perfect through suffering (Hebrews 2:10). No better—or even equal—solution was available in the past, and that fact continues to still be true.
Having a High Priest who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and performing His ministry of reconciliation in heaven was—and remains—the perfect plan for the better covenant with its priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
God’s permanent solution to human sin via the High Priesthood of Christ was perfect and will forever be perfect.
