“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 6:19-20).
Every ocean is a body of unceasing motion and commotion. It is an apt metaphor for life on our planet, where the one constant is perpetual change.
For all people—wise and unwise—life has its storms, floods, and winds (Matthew 7:24-27). Without an anchor for the soul, life can quickly become brutal and overwhelming. How and why does a child of God exercise spiritual fortitude when Satan seeks to shipwreck his faith?
HOPE.
Not wishful, childish, foolish, unrealistic thinking about life and reality.
Not rose-colored glasses and pie-in-the-sky, Pollyanna optimism.
Rather, an anchor—so secure and sure its links cannot be broken. An anchor—so steadfast and strong it cannot be snapped from its mooring to God and His sovereignty.
Unlike the Old Testament’s high priest who could only enter God’s presence in the tabernacle’s holy of holies once a year, the New Testament’s high priest has entered heaven’s holy of holies and remains. Because of Jesus, all people at all times can come into God’s presence and cast every one of their cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7).
No storm of life can destroy the anchor called hope which God has supplied to every one of His children. Tenaciously clinging to hope is the only wise way to endure all of life’s storms.
