“And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him…” (Hebrews 5:9).
The good news of glad tidings found in the gospel emanates from its legitimate offer of salvation. This verse heralds four wonderful truths about the salvation offered by Christ.
It is available. It is not a pie-in-the-sky fantasy of a fable. It is rooted in an historical person—Jesus of Nazareth—and is based upon historical facts—His life, death, and resurrection. Jesus is the author/cause; salvation is the effect.
It is eternal. Once you have inherited the kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world (Matthew 25:34) for God’s faithful children, you will be enjoying in heaven something incorruptible, undefiled, and cannot fade away (1 Peter 1:4). Eternal life has no expiration date.
It is universal. “All” can have the salvation Jesus offers. There is no privileged class. The spiritual blessings found in the gospel is for whoever answers its call by calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 2:21; 22:16).
It is conditional. Just as Christ’s obedience makes this wondrous and gracious gift of salvation possible, your obedience is necessary to make this gift a personal possession. Those who do not obey the gospel do not receive its gracious offer of salvation (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9; 1 Peter 4:17-18).
Available. Eternal. Universal. Conditional.
