“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession” (Hebrews 4:14).
The stated purpose of Hebrews is to be a word of exhortation (13:22).
The first portion of this inspired document is focused upon the importance of hearing God’s authoritative word as given by His final spokesman, His Son (1:1-4:13). It concludes in a “let us” patch—Let us fear…Let us be diligent to enter the Sabbath rest…Let us hold fast our confession (Hebrews 4:1, 11, 13).
The next section of Hebrews focuses upon the wonderful uniqueness and superiority of Jesus’ high priesthood (4:14-10:25). It has its own “let us” patch—Let us draw near boldly to the throne of grace…Let us press on to maturity…Let us draw near with a sincere heart…Let us hold fast our confession of hope…Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds (Hebrews 4:16; 6:1; 10:22, 23, 24).
Springing up in the final section (which is a call to living by daring, obedient faith and not shrinking back to perdition—10:26-13:21) is another “let us” patch—Let us lay aside every spiritual encumbrance and sin…Let us run with endurance the race set before us…Let us show gratitude…Let us go outside the camp…Let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God (Hebrews 12:1, 28; 13:13, 15).
Clearly there is a vital, pressing need for faithfulness among God’s people. Therefore: “Let us” hear God’s authoritative word. “Let us” cling to our great high priest. “Let us” live by tenacious faith.
