Serendipity is a fancy word for a fluke. There are times in God’s providence when good things happen at the most unexpected times and in the most unlikely circumstances. People who are pagan in their thinking talk using terms such as a “lucky break”, “dumb luck”, or “good fortune”. Being wise in this life is not a matter of luck; wisdom is not a fluke. No person is wise accidentally.
Solomon explains this fact quite well in the following words: “My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth and put perverse lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil” (Proverbs 4:20-27).
Note carefully why it is that wisdom is not a fluke: Wisdom requires continuous attention to enjoy its spiritual and physical blessings (vv. 20-22). Wisdom requires diligent vigilance over one’s heart (v. 23). Wisdom requires repeated removal of deceit and perversity from one’s mouth and from the company of those with such mouths (v. 24). Wisdom requires a focused attention upon one’s own life (vv. 25-27).
Wisdom does not come through serendipity. Wisdom is not a fluke.
