A Genuine Jew
“For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God” (Romans 2:28-29).
“The Jews are still God’s chosen people.”
People who spout this falsehood appear to have never read or do not believe these two inspired verses.
God’s chosen people living today are not determined by human ancestry or by circumcision. Instead, today’s “Israel of God” (Galatians 6:16)–the chosen generation, the holy nation, God’s own special people (1 Peter 2:9)–are those whose penitent hearts were circumcised with the circumcision made without hands (Colossians 2:11). They cut themselves off from the old life of sin. The old man of sin was put to death and buried in baptism into Christ’s atoning death, then they were raised to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:2-4). As “a new creation, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
In the New Testament, the Israel of God is determined by circumcision of the heart, not circumcision of the flesh. God’s chosen people are now born again of the water and the Spirit into the kingdom of God (John 3:3, 5), not born of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Your repentance, not your genealogy, matters now (Matthew 3:8-9).
No member of God’s chosen race today boasts in the flesh. All glorying now is in the Lord because of Christ and the righteousness, sanctification, and redemption found in Him (1 Corinthians 1:30-31).
