Like the psalmist who declared, “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105), King Solomon echoes this sentiment with these words: “For the commandment is a lamp and the law a light” (Proverbs 6:23). This metaphor illuminates several important truths about God’s Word and all sound parental instruction which conforms to it.
First, a lamp is portable. Just as a candle is capable of being moved from location to location to dispel darkness, so God’s Word addresses all-sufficiently and authoritatively all things that pertain to life and godliness. Its commandments and reproofs of instruction eradicate the darkness of spiritual ignorance.
Second, a lamp is a unique and distinct entity. Because it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps (Jeremiah 10:23), there is a way that seems right to sinful man, but the end thereof is the way of death (Proverbs 14:12). Therefore, something unique and distinct from humanity’s wisdom darkened by sin and folly is necessary for true light. The Holy Scriptures are the inspired revelation from God of genuine spiritual illumination. Without it, we walk in darkness.
Third, a lamp is perpetually essential. Wherever darkness is, light is necessary. The darkness of spiritual ignorance is ubiquitous in our world. Therefore, the light of God’s Word is a continuous necessity.
What a blessing is the lamp of God’s truth, the light which shines forth from His law!
