Three Truths about a Wise Man

“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook” (Proverbs 18:4).

Truth # 1: A wise man is not a babbler. Wisdom is not attained by a lifetime search for the superficial. Therefore, introverts are better equipped to find and retain wisdom; still waters often run deep.

Truth # 2: Coaxing counsel from a wise man will usually require a little time and patience. His wisdom informs him that his good counsel is not sought by many. Therefore, his words are few. There’s no prudence in casting pearls of wisdom before swine.

Truth # 3: A wise man has useful insight into all of life, not just a small segment. Curiosity is essential to pursuing and cultivating wisdom. A wise man is curious about everything; therefore, when he does speak, wisdom flows forth, like a water from a huge aquifer.
