“Wisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth” (Proverbs 17:24).
Far more is said about the mouth/tongue/lips of the wise and foolish than their eyes, but this statement by Solomon provides another stark contrast.
The foolish are such “visionaries” that they are of not practical use in the real world. They are crusaders for cleaning up the environment who cannot even clean up their own home. They are advocates for saving the planet and using every draconian measure to do so but are impervious to the hardships and expense they inflict upon the humans who populate the planet. Their life is spent addressing every perceived mote in the world but never the beam in their own eyes.
The wise use their eyes first and foremost in self-examination and self-improvement. Before seeking to help another to address the mote in his eye, he examines and removes (if present) the beam or mote in his own (Mat. 7:3-5). He understands that improving the world begins in his heart, mind, and soul.
How do you use your eyes?
