“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity…there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 17:17; 18:24).
Humans are social beings. Men need a companion and helpmeet. Women need love and protection. Children need mature and active parents who provide them a safe, secure place called “home”. The church is the body to which God adds all the redeemed so that they can help each other go to heaven.
Having a good friend—one who is far more than an acquaintance—is priceless. Such a friend is…
- Loyal (Prov. 17:17; 18:24). He comes to you when everyone else—including family—is walking away. There is nothing “fair-weather” about a good friend.
- Honest (Prov. 27:6). He is willing to have the tough conversations with you. Though he overlooks your faults and flaws, he is not blind to them. So, when the occasion arises, his tough love shines forth. Faithful are the wounds of your good friend.
- A positive influence (Prov. 27:17). You are a better person because of your good friend. He rubs off on you in such a way that your character is sharpened, helping you to be a better version of yourself.
A good friend can be one of your greatest blessings or one of your worst decisions in life. Choose carefully (Prov. 12:26).
