The Virtues of Pride and Humility

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Proverbs l6:18-19).

Pride has no virtues. Unlike the Highway of Holiness which the upright travel upon the salvation of their souls, the path of pride terminates in destruction (Prov. 15:25). It is hated (Prov. 8:13), yea, abominated (Prov. 6:16-17; 16:5) by God. This foolish (Prov. 14:3) sin (Prov. 21:4) caused strife (Prov. 13:10; 28:25), brings its possessor low (Prov. 29:23), and results in shame (Prov. 11:2).

Often pride—believing yourself to be the exception to God’s rule of law—prompts inane behavior like robbery and murder (Prov. 1:10-19). Therefore, “Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Prov. 16:19).

The many virtues of humility—being poor in spirit—will enrich your life. God gives grace to the humble (Prov. 3:34). Combined with the fear of the Lord, God blesses the humble with riches, honor, and life (Prov. 22:4). The humble man is a wise man (Prov. 11:4).

Without a doubt, it is better to be of a humble spirit and wisely heed the word of God on every matter.
