Pleasant Words

“The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord, but the words of the pure are pleasant…Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones” (Proverbs 15:26; 16:24).

Just as words that are fitly spoken are good (Prov. 15:23), words which are pure are pleasant. These gracious and kind words are sweet and healthy to the heart as well as the soul. They are the antithesis of the spirit and speech of an angry and contentious person.

Pleasant words can only come from a pure source. Just as you cannot get fresh and bitter water from the same opening (James 3:11), you cannot have pleasant words from an impure heart. Because it is out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Mat. 12:34), wicked words come from wicked hearts; therefore, “the thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord.”

If you immerse your heart in the things which are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report (Phil. 4:8), your thoughts will not be an abomination to the Lord and your words will be pleasant like a honeycomb.
