God’s Holy Love

“The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord…The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord…The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord…The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; how much more when he brings it with wicked intent… One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination” (Proverbs 15:8, 9, 26; 21:27; 28:9).

Jehovah abhors wickedness. As the above statements succinctly declare: He abominates wicked thoughts, wicked motives, wicked living, prayers spoken by the wicked, and sacrifices offered by the wicked.

His holiness is unchanging and uncompromising. His wrath is offended by all human ungodliness and unrighteousness (Rom. 1:18). Therefore, He is a just judge who is angry with the wicked every day (Ps. 7:11).

Jehovah abominates wickedness in your life and mine, because He loves us. He knows the devastation and destruction evil wreaks in our lives, and He loves us too much to be apathetic about it. Therefore, the incarnation which culminated in the cross is the cosmic showcase of God’s love (Rom. 5:8). The holiness of God necessitated the “so loved” of John 3:16.

Jehovah is not a crank who is a crank who is impossible to please: He delights in the prayer of the upright (Prov. 15:8) and loves those who pursue righteousness (Prov. 15:9). But, without His holy loathing of evil, Calvary is an expression of sadism upon His Son, not a historical proof of His love.
