Devising Plans

“Do they not go astray who devise evil? but mercy and truth belong to those who devise good” (Proverbs 14:22).

It is not wrong or unwise to make plans. Good stewardship of time and resources necessitates forethought. James warns of the sin of making presumptuous plans (James 4:13-17).

In this proverb, Solomon’s focus is on the motives and contents of the plans you make. Foolish and wicked people make plans which would inflict evil on others if/when they are carried out. In chapter one, Solomon solemnly warned his beloved son of those whose plans were to lie in wait to shed blood and lurk secretly for the innocent without cause (Prov. 1:11) so that they could fill their houses with spoil (Prov. 1:13). Such wicked plans and planners are to be avoided every time at all costs (Prov. 1:15).

Those who devise plans of mercy and truth are categorically different. These wise and righteous plans and planners are worthy of your hearty embrace and active involvement. Be a force for good. Be an instrument (literally, “a weapon”) of righteousness (Rom. 6:13). Devise a merciful and truthful plan and carry it out. Do not be guilty of talking the talk but not walking the walk (Prov. 14:23).
