“A wise man fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident…by the fear of the Lord one departs from evil” (Proverbs 14:16; 16:6).
Over a dozen proverbs commend and exhort the fear of Jehovah. It is desirable because it is the essential foundation and starting point for knowledge (Prov. 1:7) and wisdom (Prov. 9:10). It is a fountain of life (Prov. 14:27) because it spawns a hatred of evil (Prov. 8:13) and a lifestyle which departs from evil (Prov. 14:16; 16:6).
Instead of raging foolishly in defiance of God’s commandments and warnings, the wise are zealous for the fear of the Lord all day (Prov. 23:17) and reverence Jehovah’s commandments (Prov. 13:13). The wisdom of this fear is clear: it prolongs days (Prov. 10:27); it creates strong confidence (Prov. 14:26); it leads to life (Prov. 19:23); it brings riches, honor and life (Prov. 22:4); it is praised (Prov. 31:30).
Therefore, Solomon’s counsel is simple and concise: “Fear Jehovah” (Prov. 3:7; 24:21); “the fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe” (Prov. 29:25).
