“Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14).
This proverb offers two important nuggets of counsel on seeking and receiving counsel from others.
First, do seek the counsel of others. Being ignorant of the past and barely informed about the present are powerful predictors of the probability of future failure. Believing yourself to be so wise and independent that you need no one else’s insight, perspective, or experience is to believe a lie and act a fool.
Second, seek the counsel of many but don’t give every one’s insight equal weight. Though everybody may have a firm opinion, not everyone has expertise on the matter you are challenged with. Getting wise counsel may often require persistence, so don’t stop asking too soon.
Once you have prayerfully sorted out how to address the situation you are seeking counsel for, be decisive and take action.
