No Continuing City

“For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come” (Hebrews 13:14).

One of the monumental differences between Judaism and Christianity is the complete disregard Christianity has for geography and physical structures. Judaism orbited around the city of Jerusalem and its temple. It could not exist without them. Not so with Christianity. As Jesus Himself told the woman of Samaria, “The hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father” (John 4:21).

Christians “have no continuing city” on earth. This is one of the several telltale differences between New Testament Christianity and it many counterfeits. It has no earthly headquarters; the One who has sole authority over it on earth has been seated at God’s right hand in heaven (Ephesians 1:20-23) and rules with a rod of iron (Psalm 2:9; Revelation 2:27) via His written word (John 12:48).

It is the heavenly city in which Christ sits as King of kings and Lord of lords that a Christian seeks. Nowhere else is worthy of his focus and concern.
