“But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. Therefore, do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward” (Hebrews 10:32-35).
As a Christian, you are not to live in the past. Pressing toward the glorious future God has in store for the faithful is God’s upward call for you in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14). Something is terribly wrong in your life if “your best days” spiritually-speaking are behind you.
A number of the original recipients of Hebrews had a glorious past but a dismal future. After becoming Christians, they had valiantly persevered during the havoc made by Saul (Acts 8:3) and/or the harassment which came from Herod (Acts 12:1) and others. Whatever physical, emotional, or financial abuse was poured upon them or their companions, they heroically endured. Focused upon their eternal inheritance, they joyfully accepted the derision and persecution heaped on them.
But that was then. At the present time, several were soldiers in retreat. They had turned their backs on the spiritual battle they needed to face and fight. By doing this, they had also turned their backs on their glorious future. Their glory was now a thing of the past. They had cast it away along with their confidence.
Can the same be said about you?
