“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession” (Hebrews 4:14).
A major portion of Hebrews is devoted to providing a multitude of impressive reasons why the high priest of Christianity is vastly superior to the high priests of Judaism. To this point in the book, this barrage has not yet been unleashed in full force.
A good warning shot of this impending onslaught can be found in this brief phrase. Jesus’ high priesthood began after He passed through the heavens.
Unlike Aaron and his sons, the Son of God’s high priestly ministry is not conducted behind the woven veil of fabric in the tabernacle or temple. His ministry is conducted behind the veil of the heavens which He passed through to go into the presence of God where He serves.
Even with the use of a present-day rocket ship, no son of Aaron could minister where the Son of God presently does. With His ascension through the heavens (Acts 1:9), Jesus began His high priestly ministry. A ministry which is vastly superior to the one inaugurated with Aaron.
“How vastly superior?” you ask.
As heaven is higher than the earth!
