“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).
Jehovah is the one constant in an ever-changing world. He is the source of all reality. He is the inevitable judge of every one of His creatures.
Even prior to your birth, you were under Jehovah’s watchful eye (Psalm 139:15-16). From the first to the final of your breaths, you are within Jehovah’s omniscient sight. After your body and spirit have separated at death, your resurrection is as certain as God’s judgment which will follow it (John 5:28-29). Everyone must give an account to God for the things done in the body, whether good or evil (2 Corinthians 5:10).
Hebrews 4:13 helps us understand the certainty and scope of God’s omniscience:
-
No creature (angelic or human) is hidden. No one is outside His field of vision. There is no place to hide from God and His judgment because you have no way to be invisible before Him.
-
Everything is naked before Him. The night’s darkness may hide your actions from humans; it does not hinder God’s omniscience. The darkness and the light are alike to Him (Psalm 139:12). There is no place to hide from God and His judgment because you are never concealed from His eyes.
-
Everything is open to His eyes. The word translated “open” is trachelizo. (It is from this linguistic ancestor that the English word “trachea” is derived.) Literally, the word was used for the point in making an animal sacrifice when the priest would bend the animal’s neck back so that its throat was fully exposed and then slit. It is hard to imagine a more graphic expression of vulnerability.
There is no place to hide from God and His judgment.
