Not every citizen of a country gets to live in it during its heyday in history. Some—like Jeremiah and Habakkuk—live during a period of decay and disintegration, and they have to wrestle with the haunting question of Psalm 11:3—“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
Christians in Palestine in the first century (and in various times and places since) have had to live out their faith and remain steadfast in Christ while their country and communities crumbled all around them. During such national crises, where is a place of genuine safety, security, and stability for a Christian?
God’s all-sufficient word is not mute in answering this question.
The place of genuine safety, security, and stability is in God’s beloved Son. This is true, because He is the appointed heir of all things, the Creator of the universe, the brightness of God’s glory, the express image of God’s person, the Sustainer/Upholder of all things, the purifier of sins, and the seated Potentate-Priest at the right hand of God (Hebrews 1:1-4).
The place of genuine safety, security, and stability is in God’s beloved Son, because He is well-pleased with Him. Jehovah delights in Him because: His Son’s nature is superior to angels (Hebrews 1:5-2:18); His Son’s status is superior to Moses (Hebrews 3:1-4:13); His Son’s high priesthood is superior to Aaron’s (Hebrews 4:14-8:13); and His Son’s sanctuary and sacrifice are superior to the Old Testament’s (Hebrews 9:1-10:39).
The place of genuine safety, security, and stability is in God’s beloved Son in whom He is well-pleased; therefore, you must hear HIM! Live by faith which obeys Him and endures for Him (Hebrews 11:1-12:13) and “see that you do not refuse Him who speaks…serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:14-29).
Though there is nothing enjoyable about a front row seat to your country’s downfall, the course of action you can and should take has been succinctly given in God’s word.
