“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:5-8).
There are only two possible ways to live your life—by laying up for yourself treasures upon this earth while traveling on the broad way which leads to destruction or by laying up for yourself treasures in heaven while walking on the narrow way which leads to life.
Or, to use the words above—walking according to the flesh by setting your mind on the things of this material world or walking according to the spirit by setting your mind on the things of the world to come.
Being carnal-minded is to be an enemy of the cross of Christ (Philippians 3:18). You are living in alienation and hostility towards God. It is an eternal failure at loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. It is impossible to please God when the here and now—what you eat, drink, and wear—is your primary focus in life.
Being spiritually minded is to be in fellowship with God and free from His righteous condemnation of sin. It is to live in subjection to God’s authority and enjoy life and peace.
How are you walking?
