Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). His perfect life, atoning death, triumphant resurrection, and continuing priesthood ensures the ultimate, eternal triumph of good over evil.
As a master chess player, it is breathtaking to see what God has done, is doing, and will do to secure the ultimate, devastating checkmate of evil. Consider the following moves He has made:
He wisely ordained civil government and assigned it the responsibility of punishing evildoers (1 Peter 2:14). When these divinely appointed powers are a terror to evil (Romans 13:1-4), evil is contained. It is not allowed unbridled power.
He graciously provided atonement for sin. With this mighty spiritual blessing, individuals can become more than conquerors through Christ (Romans 8:37). Though a Christian in this life will never be completely free from all sin (1 John 1:8), he can sin less and less. Each personal victory over the practice of sin regains territory previously lost in the battle between good and evil.
He wisely instructed His family in ways of righteousness. When God’s word is obeyed by His children good overcomes evil (Romans 12:21). Kindness triumphs over unkindness. Mercy defeats the unmerciful. Compassion wins instead of callousness. Generosity is victorious over selfishness.
God’s war on evil will culminate in the righteous recompense of evildoers with everlasting destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power (2 Thessalonians 1:5-9).
