The chasm between Satan’s low opinion of the righteous and God’s high esteem for them could not be any wider. In addition to calling His righteousness-pursuing disciples “the salt of the earth”, Jesus also declares that they are “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14).
Ruminate unhurriedly on that incredible metaphor:
- Light provides visibility.
- Light cannot be contaminated.
- Light has therapeutic properties.
- Light eliminates darkness.
- Light deters corruption.
- Light prevents disease.
- Light exposes.
- Light gives direction.
- Light is essential to life.
Every person who pursues righteousness via the lifestyle prescribed by Jesus in the Beatitudes joins the Light of the World (John 8:12) in His stupendous work. Together, the body of these disciples are like a city that is set on a hill which cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14).
What an extraordinary pursuit righteousness is!
