A godly parent is a teaching parent. Faith in God, holy living, a properly educated and trained conscience, and wisdom to identify and avoid foolish and sinful behaviors must be taught. According to Deuteronomy 6, such instruction was to begin in every Jewish house when you arise from bed, continue during mealtime and travel, and conclude when you lie down at night (v. 7). This is how a child is brought up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
Proverbs 6:20’s instructions clearly show that both a child’s father and his mother were to be diligently involved in this ongoing challenge of parenting. “My son, keep your father’s command, and do not forsake the law of your mother.” Great blessings are promised to the children who will bind their parents’ tireless instruction upon their hearts and tie them snugly around their necks: It will lead, keep, and enlighten their way (Proverbs 6:21-23).
May God bless all fathers and mothers who are striving to be godly parents.
