According to much of today’s popular thinking and theology, the God of love does not abhor or abominate anyone or anything (except, of course, the person who dares to say that He hates sin). However, the Holy Scriptures are equally clear on these two theological truths: (1) God is love (1 John 4:8) and (2) The God of love hates, abominates sin (Proverbs 6:16ff).
This is not an impossibility. There is no contradiction. Because of His love, God seeks to bless His beloved in every possible way; He is good. Because of His love, God seeks to protect His beloved from every possible danger inflicted from without or within; He is severe. These same actions can be found every day in families around the globe. Good parents will do almost anything they possibly can to bless their children with good things; and, these same parents will do almost anything they possibly can to protect their offspring from bad things.
Because of His holy love for all humanity, God abominates “a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren” (Proverbs 6:17-19).
He is the God of love and hate.
